What Is Medicaid?
Medicaid is a federal and state program that covers medical costs for low-income people. It is the largest public health insurance program for low-income people in the country. Colorado is one of the many states that has expanded their Medicaid programs to cover more people below certain income levels.
Health First Colorado
Medicaid in Colorado is known as Health First Colorado. It is administered by the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing. Health First Colorado offers public health insurance programs to residents who meet eligibility.
Do I Qualify?
To be eligible for Colorado Medicaid, you must be:
- A resident of Colorado
- A U.S. national, citizen, or permanent resident in need of health insurance coverage
- Determined low or low income
- One of the following: pregnant, responsible for a child (18 or younger), blind, have a disability or a family member in your household with a disability, or be 65 years or older.
For income-based qualification, your family’s income cannot be over 138% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, which is used by the government to determine financial eligibility for certain programs. This means you cannot make more than $19,392/year as a single individual to qualify. If you live in a household of two, for example, the maximum income can’t exceed $26,228/year.
What Does Colorado Medicaid Cover?
Health First Medicaid gives you 3 basic kinds of benefits. These include:
- Physical health benefits
- Dental benefits
- Mental health benefits
Under Health First Medicaid, there is no premium (monthly payment) or deductible (amount of money you pay before the insurance plan starts paying for covered expenses).
How Can I Apply?
There are several ways you can apply for Health First Colorado (Colorado Medicaid):
- Online: You can apply online by visiting com/apply.
- In-person: You can submit an application in person at your local Social Security office.
- Phone: You apply via phone by calling Health First Colorado at 800-221-3943.
- Mail: To apply by mail, print a paper application from com/apply.
For each application, you will need:
- Social Security Number
- Immigration document number for non-citizens
- Employer income information for everyone in your household (e.g., pay stubs or W2 forms)
- Contact information (e.g., name, address, birthdate)
- Other income information including Social Security Administration (SSA) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments
