    Andrea's Angels Offers IHSS

In-Home Support Services (IHSS) is a program administered by Colorado’s Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (Colorado Medicaid) that allows you to choose and manage your own caregiver. Through our Family Care Program, you can hire a loved one—a family member, friend, or neighbor—to be your paid caregiver. The Medicaid waiver lets your loved one get paid for their time and effort.

IHSS is an attractive option for older adults and people with disabilities. If you have support needs and prefer to place your trust in a loved one, IHSS can keep you out of a nursing home or long-term care facility.

    Who qualifies for IHSS?

IHSS is available to Medicaid-eligible Coloradans through the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Waiver. To qualify, you must meet certain criteria, including a need for assistance with everyday tasks like bathing, dressing, and meal preparation. This program allows you to stay at home, supporting your independence and improving your quality of life.

    To receive IHSS, you must:

    • Live in Colorado
    • Have Medicaid
    • Need home care assessed by healthcare provider
    • Be able to direct your care or assign a representative.

    Who is it suitable for?

IHSS can help you remain safe at home. You get support with daily living and household tasks from a trusted loved one to let you live your best life from home. IHSS is the right choice if you prefer a loved one to help you complete everyday tasks.

IHSS is a valuable option for adults (65+) or people with disabilities who prefer a loved one to administer their care. It is a great match for people who want assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and grooming from someone they love.

What Is In-Home Support Services (IHSS)?

In-Home Support Services (IHSS) is support with personal living tasks delivered by a family member. You choose a loved one—a friend, family member, or neighbor—who helps you complete day-to-day activities you cannot perform independently. The Medicaid-funded program financially compensates your loved one for their valuable time and effort.

    What Does It Involve?

IHSS involves any non-medical support that a loved one can assist you with. It can include services like:

    • Personal Care. You get assistance with bathing, grooming, and toileting. These personal care services promote your independence and quality of life.
    • Companionship. Your loved one engages you in social activities and conversations. The emotional support your loved one provides reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness.
    • Light Housekeeping. Your loved one helps with laundry, cleaning, dishwashing, and other household responsibilities. This ensures your home is safe and tidy.

    What You Gain

IHSS gives you companionship and assistance with everyday activities—from someone you love. It means getting the personal care and attention you need from someone you trust without sacrificing your independence.

The benefits of having a loved one as your Caregiver include:

    • Familiarity and comfort – Getting care from a loved one provides a higher level of emotional comfort. This makes it easier to adjust to your care needs.
    • Increased independence – Your loved one helps you complete everyday tasks like walking, bathing, dressing, grooming, and preparing meals. You live as independently as possible with the added touch of care from someone you love.
    • Improved communication – Your loved one gets you in ways others can’t. They understand your care needs and preferences and are the best equipped to deliver.
